Bílovec Museum

The museum is situated next to the castle in a historical baroque building that was declared a cultural monument.

The building of former „official quarters“ was originally a part of the castle. It was bulit in the second half of the 18th century by baron Václav K. Sedlnitzký from Choltice as a headquarters for the local administration of Bílovec manor with housing for supreme officer (the regional governerú and scrivener. The museum and its collections date back to the turn of the twentieth century. This task was taken up by local teachers Franz Wolf and Leo Benzig. The collections became accessible to public in the year 1920 within the castle premises. In 1924 the museum was moved to the administrative headquarters where it has remained until today. The year 1925 has become an important milestone in the museum history as it was officially opened and the historical collections documenting the historical development of the town as well the common life of its inhabitants were completed and presented to the public.

The flourishing communal life of the 1920s was brutally interrupted not only by German occupation but mainly by the Second World War that significantly affected the historical collections as weel. Some of them were destroyed or stolen and the building itself was damaged. In 1963 The Bílovec Museum became a part of the Regional Museum in Nový Jičín that has turned into Nový Jičín Regional Museum. Currently, the Bílovec Museum is a part of Bílovec Cultural Center that further administers Tourist Information Center and municipal library.

Long-term Exposition

The building of the Museum was declared a cultural monument in 1958. Due to increased humidity and dry rot fungus the building gradually turned into a ruin. In 2007 a decision was made to fully reconstruct and modernize the whole object. The project was carried out with professional partnership of The Nový Jičín Regional Museum from November 2011 to August 2014 and was financed by European Union donation.

The museum offers a unique feature of a virtual guide, represented by a municipal scrivener who used to live and work here more than 200 years ago. The guide introduces the history of the town, and  among other things, empahsizes  the role of textile industry which has been very crucial for the town development since the Middle Ages. He also highlights the the Bílovec Chateau and aristocratic families who ruled the dominion.

Visitors can also visit the scrivener’s office located on the first floor where the guide explains what his job was about and what tools he used. Another exposition takes the visitors to 19th century, right into the Massag factory (originally Salcher) that produced buttons made of ivory-nuts, material imported from overseas that were exported all over the world.

he company became gradually successufl and manufactured not only fabric and metal buttons, but also textile goods, pens for artistic writing and smoking accessories. Another important product were ski bindings, including a very unique ski binding Kandahar. Visitors can also use other available technology such as touch screens.

Magic cellar of the museum cannot be missed neither by children nor adults. It is full of elves – Picmochs who are the masters of traditional crafts.

From the cellar to the roof-top that serves as an exhibition hall welcoming workshops, lectures or short-term exhibitions, the Bílovec Museum offers a wide range of attractions.
